Mission Title: Guidance Officer
James Hobayan’s fascination with air and space came early on. At 29 days old, James embarked on his first jetting experience on a trans-world flight halfway around the world. Little did James know that from then on, aviation would play a major role in his life. Through the tutorage of his aviator stepfather, James learned the mechanics of flight and the exploration of the universe. Intensely devoted to air travel, he immersed himself in learning about WWII and history of military air combat. Various visits to air museums expanded this budding aviator’s passion for space travel.
James occupies himself with his vast collection of Star Wars Lego sets and his flight simulator software. With the guidance of his 747 Captain stepfather, James hones his flying skills by taking on unusual scenarios to enhance his shrewd, critical thinking.
A three-time Columbus School Science Fair award recipient, James immerses himself in several school activities. When James joined the Recycling Club, he embraced the “going green” movement proudly because he knew that he was helping save the environment. When James joined the Classic Movies Club, he developed an appreciation for the theater and arts that lead him to enjoy movies like “Singing in the Rain” and “Sound of Music.” His newfound interest motivated him to watch several Broadway shows, where he often emulated the acting styles and set designs of the production. An avid photographer, James recently joined the Photography Club. He is also currently experimenting on home movies that he downloads to “youtube.” His production company is called “Coll91 Productions.” Recently, he had the honor of conducting the 4th and 5th Grade Chorus for the School Holiday Concert. A proud torch bearer in the Olympic Torch Run, James carries responsibilities given to him with conviction and dedication. The safety minded individual that he is, James has been commissioned to the school safety patrol where he dutifully monitors the hallways of his beloved school to protect and serve his teachers and his fellow students.
Born in Norwalk on June 26, 1998, James has been with the Young Astronaut Mission for as long as he can remember. His most valued possession is his collection of mission patches.
He considers his favorite person, Zach Pearce, as his inspiration for this mission. A former Young Astronaut Mission participant, Zach attends Union College in Schenectady, NY and keeps in touch with James regularly to encourage him to follow his dream. James’ solid commitment to the Young Astronaut Mission allows him to do just that – expand and live his passion of space and flight exploration. He dedicates his mission to his best friend, Zach Pearce.
