4th GRADE EXPECTATIONS

Reading:

  • Compare, contrast, and draw conclusions from text information
  • Express opinions with support from the text
  • Generate questions before/during reading & make valid predictions
  • Identify main idea & supporting details in text
  • Summarize text
  • Read with fluency & expression
  • Read a minimum of 25 books

Writing:

  • Elaborate on ideas with relevant details
  • Sequence ideas to organize writing
  • Write in complete paragraphs
  • Produce quality writing using a variety of genres (narrative, expository, and persuasive)
  • Revise and edit pieces of writing
  • Bimonthly timed writing prompts


Spelling:

  • Apply spelling skills and strategies

Social Studies:

  • Regional map skills/physical features
  • Acquire knowledge of Connecticut and the Northeast Region
  • Regions of the United States and their natural resources
  • Responsibilities of citizenship

Science:

  • Ecosystems and Biomes
  • Adaptations of Animals and Endangered Species

Math:

  • Add and subtract 2 to 4 digit numbers
  • Construct and interpret graphs, tables, charts, and diagrams
  • Multiply and divide 2 digit numbers by 1 digit numbers
  • Solve multi-step math problems
  • Solve probability problems
  • Understand/use concepts of place value, fractions, geometry, time, estimation, and measurement

All Subject Areas:

  • Grades are based on class participation, class work, and test grades.
  • Students will be involved in class discussions, cooperative group work, and hands-on activities.
  • Teachers will work in conjunction with parents on homework as well as academic and behavioral concerns.
  • Develop critical thinking skills in all subject areas.
